FIELD PRACTICUM

Our field practicum program offers a meaningful learning experience for students who want to make a real impact in the foster care sector.

At Bridgeway, we believe students deserve more than a placement—they deserve a transformative learning experience. Since 2014, our field practicum program has been designed to immerse future professionals in the heart of child welfare work, offering hands‑on learning, thoughtful mentorship, and opportunities to contribute in ways that matter. You’ll be learning, participating, reflecting, and growing every step of the way.

CHILD & YOUTH WORK (CYW) 

A flexible, hands‑on placement within our Support Services division designed for students who want direct experience with children, youth, and foster families.

Field Practicum Advantages for CYW Students:

  Supervised experiences with Family Support Professionals in a Foster Home and in the community

  Flexibility to choose projects aligned with your interests

  One‑on‑one and peer supervision

  Plan and co‑facilitate weekly sessions

SOCIAL WORK (BSW/MSW)

A flexible, research‑friendly placement within our Clinical Services division designed for students who want individualized learning and professional autonomy.

Field Practicum Advantages for Social Work Students:

  Mostly virtual format with independent, self‑directed learning

  Supervised experiences with Bridgeway's clinical staff in a Foster Home and in the community

  Flexible hours tailored to your goals and academic requirements

  Opportunities to pursue individualized projects (research, training development, specialized initiatives)

WHAT STUDENTS WILL EXPERIENCE DURING THEIR FIELD PRACTICUM WITH BRIDGEWAY

HANDS-ON LEARNING

Bridge academic learning with foster care practice through observation, research, analysis, one-on-one engagement, and meaningful project work.

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

Develop practical skills, gain insights into specialized areas of practice, and learn from guest speakers across diverse social service sectors.

MENTORSHIP & COLLABORATION

Build relationships with experienced professionals, receive supportive mentorship, and observe multidisciplinary teamwork in action.

REAL-WORLD PRACTICE

Gain exposure to the inner workings of service environments by participating in meetings, contributing to clinical assessments, and observing professional interviews.

SPECIALIZED TRAINING

Access extensive training and learning opportunities in areas such as foster parenting, behaviour management, FASD, indigenous perspectives, and trauma-informed care.

FUTURE PATHWAYS

Prepare for future careers in social services, with potential post-practicum opportunities to continue your journey through a part-time contracted role with Bridgeway Support Services.
